Falling stars are supposed to be a lucky sign, but not for Austen. Her new job as a secretary in an international games company isn’t off to a good start. Her first assignment—decorating the Christmas tree in the lobby—results in a trip to the ER after Dee, the company’s second-in-command, gets hit by the star-shaped tree topper. Dee blames her instant attraction to Austen on her head wound, not the magic of the falling star. She’s determined not to act on it, especially since Austen has no idea that Dee is practically her boss.

Well, I liked pieces of it. The opening 20-30% or so was very amusing and had me the most engaged. There is a bit of a goofy and childish tone to the whole story, actually. I'm not sure if I mean that in a bad way, lol... but I have to be in a certain mood to appreciate this kind of lesfic. I associate Jae's style with innocence and virgins and unicorns and rainbows and there's a certain audience for that. Overall, I found this to be lighthearted fluff that veered into junior high dynamics.
So it's not surprising this one is set at the company Kudos Entertainment, a Fortune 500 company that produces toys for children, lol. All the employees gossip worse than junior high and they fear and despise second-in-command Ms. Dee Saunders like an evil headmistress who paddles their behind.
Enter Austen Brooks, the new administrative assistant to Dee's brother, first-in-charge. Austen doesn't know Dee at all and is soon involved in a Christmas tree mishap that has them both spending a long night together in the ER. Austen isn't bright enough not to badmouth this crazy boss lady Ms. Saunders she's already heard so much about, and Dee isn't professional enough to come clean with her actual identity.... because she's rather enjoying bossy little Austen's company and caretaking. So they bond under this 'sin of omission' and then the book goes on forever and ever trying to resolve this conflict until it's a mere nub. ack. There are cute parts and the book does move on from the initial conflict, but at nearly 400 pages, you could easily cut 100+ pages out of this book and nothing would be missed. It was much too long.
I actually enjoy most simple, easy-reading lesfic... but struggled to like or even believe in these characters (as well as their attraction). They're just not very grown up. Dee is not very boss-like. I don't think we ever got much evidence to justify her "Attila" rep. And Austen is like a bossy little girl dragging Dee around by the nose. They seem more like two dweebs who work in a pet store. Throw in Dee's man-centered sexist family and she seems that much more like a child.
meh. I think this would have been more interesting if the author just ran with the toy company and juvenile characterizations and *consciously* gave us a dose of the likes of Big (the movie)... because adults who behave like children in a company that produces toys had a lot more potential for humor here.
I was mildly engaged.

Under a Falling Star Jae Books Reviews
Let me start by saying I'm a huge fan of Jae's books! For me, this is far the best of the lesbian romance books I've ever read, in fact I've read it multiple times. Jae's characters are real people & you can't help but be captivated by them, you feel sympathy for Dee but at the same time admire her strength. Austen is a spitfire & I like that the way the 2 of them play off eachother. I hope Dee & Austen make a return in future book.
I'm not very good at writing individual reviews because I tend to accidentally give away spoilers and plot points so I
figured I would write out a generic review instead and save myself the time and trouble. If I am putting this review on a
book it means that I found it to be truly exceptional and I enjoyed the journey very much, so thank you to the Author for
putting a great story down on the pages
You sometimes hear about it in the military, but rarely hear about it happening in the work place. Every one has rules about partners reporting to partners (a big no-no), but sometimes The heart sometimes overrides the brain. Has has done a masterful job of developing her characters. You will laugh, cry and get angry as the pages turn. Could your heart stand up to office rules/politics and win? Jae's characters fight for their hearts to become one. What do you do when your heart beats for an employee when you are the Chief Operating Officer, your Uncle is the Chief Executive Officer? Who will win... your heart or office politics?
What a well written book. It held my interest throughout. I am not one to go into the specifics of a book because I think that sometimes that spoils the read for the next person. There are a few books that I put on my "would revisit list" and this is one of those books. I don't think you will be disappointed if you purchase Under a Falling Star. I have found most of Jae's novels to be very entertaining but this one goes at the top of the list.
Under a Falling Star can be best described as a cross between Jericho (for the slightly corny and quirky humor), and Tropical Storm (because of the tough boss and sweet co-worker-falling-in-love-scenario). I say that to mean that the premise is not very original. There are dozens of romances about the mean boss meeting her match and falling in love with the secretary/admin assistant.
Even though we're not being wowed by anything new here, there is something about Jae's writing that just feels good, when she hits the mark. This story is very light, and very basic. It's funny, kind of sexy, and leaves you with a warm and fuzzy feeling. The ending was abrupt to me, with all the issues the characters faced culminating all at once and then the resolution, and then the end. A little rushed in my opinion. You'll get maybe 2 or 3 love scenes, and some laughs. If you're looking for a nice rainy day book to pass the time, or just something easy pick this one up if you can live with the price. Not bad at all.
Jae has yet to fail to impress me. Flawlessly depicting corporate culture, for all its quiet assumptions, backstabbing rumor mills and casual abuses of power over their underlings and assistants. All the while weaving in a very sweet romance into the corporate quagmire of sexism and power brokering.
My only issue was there could have been more, heh. The novel covers a year in their lives and while it shows enough to cover their developing characters there were so many areas that I felt could have been longer. Not because they were bad, but just for the selfish reason that I wanted 'more'. )
I will definitely be adding the companion novel "Conflict of Interest" to my to be read list.
