From a review by the HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER, Grady Harp

The real pleasure of jumping into this mystery is the manner in which Richard Houston writes. Think Garrison Keillor's `A Prairie Home Companion', a dab of Mark Twain, and a dollop of John Grisham - marinate out in nature, and out comes Houston's style. Not bad ingredients for an author on the rise.

Jake Martin is not your ordinary sleuth. He’s an ordinary guy with an extraordinary dog. This time the story takes place in the foothills of Denver. Jake is accused of manslaughter and he has to prove the accident was really murder. Along the way he encounters a poaching ring and falls in love with a beautiful game warden. The characters are memorable and the plot is multi-layered. It keeps the reader guessing who dun-it until the very end.

A Book to Die For Books to Die For 2 edition by Richard Houston Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I read it because I hoped it would be better than the first book. No, it wasn't . The characters were unlikable . If Jake was as broke as he keeps whining about he could never afford all the beer he guzzled. Hardly a page goes by without him popping the top off a cold one. There are too many minor characters and their relationships to one another are confusing. They are a backstabbing bunch and completely disloyal to Jake who tries to help them. His love interest is more a case of hormones and is quickly discarded. The author can't make up his mind how sick he wants her to be. She is incoherent but wait! She is with it enough to run an investigation. She's taken medical leave but wait! She is still working. By the end of this book I didn't even like the dog.
It was an engaging story. There were some editing issues that had me reading and rereading often enough to be annoying. But, it was an entertaining read and kept me turning the pages. Keeping all the lineages of the characters straight was interesting. It was a weird ending, but no loose ends. I didn't read the first book of the series, and it did not impact my understanding or enjoyment. I would give another book in this series a try.
I just finished reading A Book To Die For by Richard Houston. Just as enjoyable as his first book, A View To Die For. Richard has the formula for a comedic murder mystery down pat! This outing has Jake and Fred helping their neighbor Bonnie and her sister Margot, edit a book written by their father. Along the way, while trying to stay out of trouble himself, Jake falls in love. This author's style of writing is very refreshing. It's like you're sitting in the room having a conversation with him. I wound up reading this book in a day. The writing is fast-paced and easy to read. There are a lot of subplots running simultaneously with the main plot, but doesn't get bogged down. If you like murder mysteries, comedy and dogs (especially golden retrievers) - get these books. You will be spellbound and laughing from beginning to end.
Didn't read much, but enough to know I didn't need to read any more. Terrible language and very crude. A waste of time!
This book is a humorous cozy murder mystery. All the violence and murder happens off-scene. This is the second book in the series and I haven't read the first, but that wasn't a problem as this is a stand-alone mystery.

I enjoyed the humor provided by the interaction of the dog Fred with the main character Jake, his neighbor Bon Bon, and his girlfriend Julie. While Jake was solving the recent murder of Lonnie and with the attempts on his (Jake's) life, Fred's personality quirks were a welcome rest stop in the action. There's a lot going on in this book besides the current murder. There's a second murder (this one by hit and run) from years before that Jake is also working on solving as a sub-plot. There's the on-again off-again romance between Jake and Julie and whether or not they will stay together as a second sub-plot.

There are all kinds of motives including poaching and blackmail. Suspects abound from neighbors to sisters. There are several twists and turns and dead ends. The intertwined plot and sub-plots are handled well and solved by the end (including one in the Epilogue). Since the story is told in first person, the reader knows everything Jake knows.

This book is perfect for anybody who wants to play a game of trying to solve the murder(s) before the main character.
I finished reading the book, “A View to Die For” last week. I wanted to read the next book in this series, “A Book to Die For”. I love how the dog, Fred, is a major character in this book as he was in the last book. This book is a mystery, love story, and comical all in the same book. It keeps you guessing until the end with lots of twists and turns. I look forward reading more from this author.
Hard not to like a detective who really isn't a detective with a partner who's a dog. Can't decide who is smarter but in any case, the story is easy and fun to read.
