Falling Christopher Pike 9780765317186 Books

I've been a Pike fan since the mid-90s. I've read nearly every YA book he's ever published. Anyway, I have the memory of a gnat and I can't remember some important events in my life, let alone the names of the characters in a book I've read a week ago. That said, I've read Falling four years ago, and yet I can still remember the names of the protagonists. This story moved me beyond words and has taken up residence in my heart. Christopher Pike wrote this book with heart. I haven't read any book that has portrayed the full range of human emotions like Falling. This book centers around two main protagonists; Matt Connor and Kelly Fienman. You can't help but FEEL Matt's despair and Kelly's fortitude. Kelly is one (if not the most) strongest, memorable heroines I've ever read about. She is vulnerable, yet exudes an inner-strength that we would all love to emulate. As a reader, you will feel a range of emotions. Be it frustration, sympathy (even empathy), admiration. Pike has outdone himself with the characterization. By the time the book ends, you will feel like you've lost a friend.

This is a complex, well-plotted story with many twists and turns. Without giving away any spoilers, this is the story about a lovesick man who stages his death in order to get back at his manipulative, evil girlfriend, Amy. There's a subplot to the story regarding a serial killer (which pays homage to Hannibal lecter) but it all ties together in the end. ( Please avoid reading the back cover because it gives away the plot.) There are no loose ends and the ending is brilliant and very satisfying! This book will appeal to thriller/mystery lovers. The book blurb reads: literary crack cocaine" and it is!

Falling Christopher Pike 9780765317186 Books Reviews

Another homerun for Christopher Pike. Like most of his books, this a is a page-turner.
Love this book, it's one of my favorite adult novels by Christopher Pike (though admittedly i'm biased- I'm a huge fan of most of his work). I originally bought a copy for a friend, as a gift, and then decided I needed a hard copy for myself. If you appreciate stories of hurt and betrayal and vengeance, you are bound to enjoy this book. Yet you'll be getting much more than that. This is a masterfully orchestrated storytelling of passion and mystery that is sure to resonate with you for a very long time.
I recently started revisiting Christopher Pike books, having last read his novels well over a decade ago in my High School days and remembering him as being an author I really enjoyed. Probably the last books of his I read were Season of Passage (which I loved loved loved, need to reread this and see if it still holds up but it is not available on and my old copy is long gone, alas) and Sati which was not as engaging to me, but still a decent book. I was excited to see a relatively new publication by Pike, and bought "Falling" hoping to fall under the spell again. I was somewhat disappointed, but it was still an enjoyable read where the style I used to love shines through here and there.

This book, Falling, is in a way a typical Pike teen book with adult characters. There are twists, crimes, detailed escapes and getaways. Beautiful, smart female characters and handsome, interesting males. Tie ins to mythology are present (though this is not on of his super-natural novels). There is an air of suspense - who is really bad and who is really good? However, somehow, all of this does not all come together to be a great Christopher Pike read.

Some of the problems I had were in the word-use. The worlds "exceptionally brilliant," or "exceptionally intelligent," were way over-used. It seems like intelligence is not truly exceptional in this world, since every one has this characteristic who is given any time in the story. The main guy character, Matt, is one of these "exceptionally brilliant" folks, yet he acts in such stupid ways. I know, love makes you stupid, but geesh. He is the most uneven character going through the book. He is clearly unbalanced and obsessive, yet we are also told (rather than shown) he is a good guy. He is deliberately kept mysterious throughout the novel. The main female character was more enjoyable, sort of a renegade Clarice Starling, though some of the decisions this supposedly "exceptionally intelligent" person does are also stupid and self-destructive. It is more believable with her as her thought process is more clearly explained throughout the book. This brings me to another minor gripe - the plot was pretty derivative of Silence of the Lambs. It is an interesting plot, but similar enough to draw inevitable comparisons. I have seen other reviews complain of plot holes. The plot is convoluted. I am sure if you take the time to dissect it, it would not hold up under intense scrutiny. The FBI agent-lady would never have kept her job in real life it would seem after she confronts that guy one-on-one. On a superficial level, however, the book holds up better than some other fictional works.

On the plus-side, the book was interesting enough to keep me flipping through the pages. I skimmed a little bit when it got bogged down in the detailed steps of things, like how to make a great escape plan with a boat, a plane, a parachute, and scuba gear. The writing as a whole is just not up to what I think of as a great Christopher Pike book, but still worth reading whether you are a fan or not.
I have read almost every single book Christopher Pike has put written. My first was The Last Vampire, and it was by far my favorite of all his books up until Falling. He's a brilliant author. In typical Pike fashion, he manages to keep you HOOKED until the very end. I have found, and I'm sure many people will agree, that once you start reading, you wish you could just read it straight through.

Falling is a very nice sized book, and I actually found myself thinking about the book and trying to "figure things out" before I would read a few more chapters each night. Pike has an amazing ability to to keep you guessing, and in the end, you're always wrong. His twists are what I love in his novels, but second to that is his creativity in describing the lives, minds, and feelings of each his characters. If you've read any of his books, you can expect the usual.. you will fall in love with everyone in the book, and be heartbroken when you finish, but only because there will be no more to read.

Buy this book. Read it. Love it. Christopher Pike has been my favorite author for almost a decade, and I hope he continues to release books as quickly as he can dish them out.
I could not put this story down. It was an amazing read! I love the way the author payed attention to details, each time something happened I screamed out whether it was a cheer or another emotion. I highly recommend this if you are into suspense and thrills! There are some graphic moments both gory and sexual. I wouldn't recommend this book for the weak of stomach ) Once i reached the last page I just wanted more, I didn't want it to end.
