To understand my point of view, a brief overview of my reading preferences. I prefer a series over a stand alone. And I would rather have the main heroine/hero featured in each book instead of swapping in different couples. I don't mind sexual content unless it seems that's all the book is about. I read mostly from the fantasy/paranormal/romance genres. I'm an avid reader and read around 100 books a year. My favorite authors are:Karen Marie Moning - both Highlander and Fever series
Nalini Singh - Guild Hunter series
Karen Chance - Cassie Palmer series
Ann Charles - Deadwood series
Darynda Jones - Charlie Davidson series
Ilona Andrews - Magic series
Faith Hunter - Jane Yellowrock series
Laurell K. Hamilton - Anita Blake - 1st 10 books in the series, before it turned into an excuse to write orgies

I was surprised that this was a 1st time author. It was much more polished than I had anticipated.
Plot - 4
Romance - 3
Characters - 4
Overall story - 3
Book as a whole - 3.75
It was a nice new take on werewolf/vampires. I always love an original plot. They are hard to come by in a market that's saturated with this genre.
This was romance light. I just never felt the emotional depth from the characters that I have in other books. Although some of the romance scenes were pretty humorous.
The characters were well written. The author did a great job of "voicing" them. Most of the men were Scottish and the way it was written I could hear the accent very clearly in my head. The heroine was likable and easy to relate too.
The story is a bit slow paced but the story and characters were interesting enough that it still kept my attention. Although most of the story was well done, the ending I found a bit lacking. Some of the explanations just seemed a bit over simplified and the characters took the answers too much at face value for everything that lead up to them.
Overall, an enjoyable read. Since most authors only improve with time I'm looking forward to seeing what she writes next.

Darkness Descends A Skye Faden Novel eBook Alisha Ashton Reviews
Sometimes the recommendations for books similar to the ones already in my library are so much of the same. Same kind of plot, same kind of characters, same type of antagonist. That is not the case with this book.
From the very first chapter, I was glued to the pages. I couldn't guess where the story was headed, and that kept me eager for more. This is not a short story either. Mrs. Ashton spent a good portion of the story on character development and her world building (a mix of past and present) was a pleasure to read.
A new favorite author to follow for sure!
All I can say is OMG! This was such a great book. I usually read only series, but happened on to this book. Alisha Ashton wrote a fantastic book. Interesting characters in a very believable world. Skye Faden is no regular girl. She is a kick ass vampire killer with a frightening past. Her parents were killed by vampires and then she and her brothers were taken, her brothers turned and she was kept prisoner for 9 years suffering terrible atrocities. When she escapes she takes down as many as she can including her brothers.
During the last fight to take down the remaining brother there is one lone figure that stands out. As she attacks, so does he and then a whole new world becomes hers.
I don't want to give to much away, but this book had me laughing, crying and oh my'ing..... definitely a big five stars!
I had given up hope that there were actually any real authors out there. This is an actual BOOK! It is more than 150 pages long which, to some of you, might be a little scary. Yet, when you have action, a great storyline, awesome secondary characters and romance.....the story just flows. Within the first few chapters, I knew I had happened on another great writer. The same way I knew reading my first Sookie novel and first Anita Blake. As with all "first" novels, you have to get the back story developed, characters fleshed out etc. There were times I was itching to just skim past the lengthy explanations and move on to the action but I am glad I didn't.
This book had it all. Steamy romance which kept you craving more. In other words, it was not over the top constant sex. It made me laugh out loud, hurt for the lead character and then laugh again. The tales within the story were great and I really hope we get more stories involving the host of other secondary characters.
I would give this book 10 stars if I could and cannot wait to buy the next one.
I've not yet finished this book, but I couldn't wait to give it a review. I absolutely love it. If this is the author's debut, I can't wait to see what else she has in store for us! The book is so multi-faceted. And there are so many different interesting plots running simultaneously that seem to ultimately tie together. But while there is some elements that are left unanswered to draw out your intrigue for a while, she doesn't continually leave you stranded wondering what the heck is going on. She answers questions in a reasonable amount of time and you aren't left feeling like you're just being strung along. It whets the appetite. Keeps you motivated to continue on to keep finding out more and more. And the hotness factor of the main characters - the descriptions, and the speech mannerisms she gives really sells that you are reading about ancient Celts. She also includes some fascinating historical elements that really gravitates the story and makes it more compelling. Seriously good story, too. Strong female lead who isn't really one to cast dispersions on men for no other reasons than that they are members of the opposite sex. She relays strong, sensible males in a healthy viewpoint that offer both strength and support in a protective, yet encouraging manner. She covers the spectrum! I don't want to give away too many details. But this is definitely worth your time. Now... if only I could stop reading it and get some work done.....
