If only my college experience had been so interesting.I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There were times when I didn’t know exactly where it was going, but it all came together in the end. At no point during reading it was I ever bored, but there were times when I had to really think about what was going on in the story, and I appreciated that. I like that this author made me think as well as entertain me.
This is a new adult story, very realistic and a bit steamy in places, but that’s what college is for. There’s nothing shocking in this story, but is very mature and sophisticated. The heroine isn’t a ditz who doesn’t know how pretty she is, but despite that, when she meets a man who looks like a god, she does drool a bit. Who wouldn’t?
Out of character for me, I fell hard for the strong, brooding, and dark Wallace. Not sure why, but who cares. We soon learn that there’s more to him than his brooding and there’s no doubt that he’s the type of dangerous that you want on your side, perhaps cuddling up with you at night… I digress.
Wallace’s family, not so alluring at first, but I won’t go into that.
Back to the heroine, Rena. I like her. She’s practical and smart. She’s more scared of going to church than she is facing a possible homicidal maniac, but she has her reasons. She also has a great group of friends. I want to say more about this but I don’t know how without giving away something.
This is thrilling from beginning to end. The slow parts add an edge of suspense to an already intense story and the action is amazing to the point where my superhero geek mind was definitely blown. Yes, there is a romance in this story, but it is second to the actual story and action. Got the next two books already.
Recommended to adult readers (teens with parental agreement) who like urban fantasy.

"…being with him was an inevitability I needed. Something I wanted. Something I would fight for." -Rena
Strength is definitely the right title for this book and summarizes it perfectly. Throughout the book we see the characters become stronger physically and emotionally as they tackle the hurdles that come their way. If the characters themselves don't captivate you then the mystery and romance will. The mystery surrounding who or what Wallace truly is totally threw me for a loop. It might sound sorta cliche but for real, I thought I knew but I had no idea. I absolutely loved following along with Wallace and Rena as there friendship blossomed into something more. They're such intriguing characters who you can't help but fall in love with and want more of. Strength will grab your attention from beginning to end.
"…I'll never be able to show… some woman I love her. I'll never be able to hold her and sleep with her at my side, because I'll be scared to death of crushing her. I'll never be a husband. I'll never be a father." He panted hard, his eyes boring into mine. "I didn't ask for this. Any of it." -Wallace
WALLACE Touch. Something that goes greatly unnoticed everyday. But what would it be like to be afraid to touch someone out of fear of hurting them? To have to isolate yourself from everyone so you won't unintentionally hurt someone you care about? A life without affection? Never to feel someone else's touch. This is the life Wallace has lived, for so many years. A life if isolation. He has very little family interaction and most of the kids at school fear him. As rumors about him fly around school, he becomes a social pariah. That is until he bumps into (literally) the one person who will change everything. She'll help him not just with his physical strength but with his inner strength as well. He'll learn that even though he can be dangerous when he isn't focused and is different from everyone else, he can still have the life he's always wanted but never thought he could have. A life he's never allowed himself to have. Everything starts escalating with a visit from his twin brother. Someone he tries his hardest to ignore and one he would rather leave in the past. His brother reminds him of a tragic past he'd rather forget. Things start getting bumpy as Rena finds out the truth about Wallace and trouble comes knocking in the form of his cousin. Wallace finds himself really protective of Rena even though they've only known each other for such a short time. His feelings for her, though he tries to restrain them, are so evident. So much so that those around him notice a change within him even if he won't admit it to himself. Wallace tries to hide his feelings and not act on them to protect her. He wants her to have the life she deserves. A life he doesn't believe he can give her. But as she starts revealing her feelings for him he can't help but let his show. He's finally found someone who understands him and who actually took the time to get to know him; all of him. The good, the bad, and the ugly. She was by his side since the fateful day they bumped into each other. She showed him just how much she was willing to fight for them; for their future together. And now, so will he.
"Being with him wasn't the sacrifice he'd claimed to be; it was a blessing that'd come in disguise. It was hard to believe that, at one point, I'd been afraid of him. Now I could only fear what I'd be without him." -Rena
RENA Guilt. Redemption. Love. I loved Rena's character and enjoyed watching her grow as a person. She recognized her wrong doing and was determined to make things right. Being one of Wallace's condemners, she judged him based on what others said about him and never even gave it a second thought or actually try to get to know the guy. She helped him become the social outcast that he was by spreading what she heard and ultimately influencing others' perceptions of Wallace. When she meets him for the first time, she realizes that all her assumptions of him may be wrong. After just a few interactions she realizes that she was definitely wrong about him and sees herself becoming protective of him. Every time her friends talk about him, she has no problem setting them straight. She becomes determined to give Wallace a chance and get to know him. As they spend more time together, she begins to look forward to the next time she'll see him or simply hear his voice on the phone. While she finds out more about him, she also finds out more about herself. Though she may not be physically as strong as Wallace, her inner strength definitely makes up for it. When presented with the situation she was in, many would run. Especially after finding out about his past but she doesn't. She doesn't see him as who he was or what he's done. She only sees him for who he is now. The guy she fell in love with. Someone she so easily misjudged and cast aside. The one who showed her its never too late to right your wrongs and stop yourself from becoming someone you never wanted to be. He was once someone she could do without and now he's become someone she can't live without. Though being with him means more bumps in the road and definitely more trouble ahead, she wouldn't have it any other way as long as he was right there with her through it all.
"It all made sense now. What my mother had meant when she said when I fell in love, I would just know. I knew. I finally freakin' knew. It resonated in my heart and pulsed through my veins. -Rena
Overall, I completely enjoyed this book and fell for all of the characters; especially Wallace. Though the main character is Rena, I really felt that this was Wallace's book. I absolutely loved his interactions with Rena and how different he was with her. He's for sure now one of my book boyfriends. I can't wait to see wait lies ahead for Rena and Wallace in Courage. I would recommend Strength to all Paranormal readers who enjoy a unique plot and enticing characters who will leave you writhing for your next fix.

"How can you with one breath praise God and then with the next, scorn you own existence? Did you leave your faith in you church clothes or what?" -Rena
"My heart was racing in my chest, like some stupid teenager with a crush. Of course, in my case, being crushed was a distinct possibility." -Rena
"You're the strongest, most beautiful woman I've ever known, Rena." -Wallace
"You" he muttered, tucking one finger beneath my chin, "are anything but ordinary." -Wallace
It's official. I have a new book boyfriend. I'm officially claiming him in public. I'm in love with Wallace.
This book jumped of the computer screen at me the first time I read the description. I'll admit that I had a few reservations because while I knew it was paranormal, I wasn't sure what kind of paranormal it was. I was expecting werewolves or some other kind of shape shifter but I was pleasantly surprised.
This book held my interest from the first page and I didn't want to put it down. And when I did have to because life intruded on my reading time, I was counting down the interminable minutes until I could go back to Wallace and Rena. I honestly loved every moment of this book. I loved the chemistry between Rena and Wallace.
My least favorite aspect of the book was Cole. When he was first introduced, I was intrigued. Then I came to hate him. I wanted to throw him off a cliff, onto some very sharp rocks below. But he slowly grew on me. I can't say I loved him, but we came to an (uneasy) coexistence.
This is part of a series, but this book has a definite ending. THERE ARE NO CLIFFS. I definitely can't wait to read the next book in the series, and Carrie Butler definitely has a new fan!
