This book brings out the indecisiveness in me, which I hate. I liked the premise of the book and the characters, fundamentally, but I hated the execution and aspects of the characters. Also, as been stated prior, and even with the updated version, there are still some editing issues. For example, the heroine starts out driving a Mercedes and ends driving a BMW, with no purchase occurring in between. Odd.
************************Warning, potential spoilers********************************
Nahla, the heroine started off as this strong character, who defied her parents by changing majors in college. Her parents cut he off, so Nahla got a job, struggles to pay bills, keeps her grades up, and all the while she is changing and does not realize it. My issue with her is that she becomes very weak once she finds out she has been born with the Biblical gift of supernatural healing. While I have no issue with her recognizing that this gift should not be in her causing her to want to return it, her reaction is a bit too negative. She becomes this complaining, cry baby that is just not in character with who she was prior to her gift emerging.
And then there is Gideon, who is drawn to Nahla, whose gift emerged when he was much younger. While he too wants to give his gift back, he has not approached it with such negativity that Nahla has. Another issue I have with this book is sex. The characters are terrified to be together for fear of pregnancy. (I guess they never thought about various methods of birth control.) But, even with that, the scene at her parent’s house with the rose was a bit ridiculous. If writing intimate scenes is not a strength, it is OK to just say, “he proceeded to give her pleasure in ways that will not lead to conception,” or something. I was also amazed that the intimate scene took place at her parent’s house.
In the end, I finished the book as I really did want to know what would happen, but I do not want to continue. While I realize that at least three other people exist with the gifts, the author did not set up the first book to make me want to continue. Nahla’s personality changed too much, the way her relationship with Gideon is unfolding lacks heat for adults, and Nahla’s negativity makes the investment too arduous. I guess what I am saying is that the book lacked consistency throughout, which is evidenced by Nahla’s car changing on campus. It is as if the author changed her mind about the characters midway through, but did not go back to the beginning to address. Perhaps the other books reconcile all of this and become more consistent, but with some many books out there to read, I will pass on the others in this series. The author is definitely talented, and while I hope she writes more books, I hope she gets an editor and reviewers who will help her address the issues with consistency.

The Gifts Vol 1 The Gifts Trilogy eBook Patria L Dunn Patria DunnRowe Christine M Butler Reviews

All in all, I enjoyed this story. From the cover picture, I had some idea about what the novel had in store, but I was thinking it was going to have a darker connotation as its opposite than it did. It was a refreshing read, and the concept was very interesting. The author does a good job of portraying the innocence lost of the characters, and what they lost, and what they stood to gain. It was a very interesting read, and I think I'll pick up the rest of her books too!
This story had me from the beginning and held my interest all the way to the end! I love the ethnic diversity and the twists this story took. I don't usually read books you have to pay for, but I just might go ahead, break down and buy the second and third volumes to this one. The ONLY negative I have, (and this is just a personal thing) is that the Bible was intertwined with this fiction. For me, the Bible is truth and I don't like mixing Truth and fiction. It did not give it a feeling of authenticity, which is what I believe the author was going for, it just made me feel like I should put it down. I got past that though and enjoyed the rest of the story. I liked the magic, the physical transformation Nahla went through and the love story; which was poignant and so believable. Great read for a rainy day or a lonely night! -)
The Gifts follows a pair of semi-angelic college students, Nahla and Gideon. Blessed or cursed with some of the powers of a fallen angel, Nahla becomes known to the media after healing a professor from terminal cancer. After this, she and her new boyfriend Gideon have to flee from the government as well as the Seekers, a group of spiritual hunters. I'd say the general theme for this book is good, but slightly over-the-top. The writing was a bit too ornate, but still readable and fun. The romance between the two was a bit too extreme and encompassing, and the government reaction was too swift and vicious. Potentially the biggest believability issue is that a college student would chose to give up powers, her wings, and immortality. Overall, good, and free's always a great price. Recommended primarily to fans of paranormal romances.
I had no idea what to expect when I downloaded this book for free. There is the old adage that you get what you pay for.

The adage is wrong in this case. Brilliant authorial debut!

I found this paranormal romance so beautiful though bitter sweet because of the barriers the main characters have to surmount. A young girl at a crossroads in her life with what studies and ultimately what career she would like to pursue makes a decision that disappoints her parents and puts her out on her own. That is only the first of many changes. Her body is changing and she thinks she is going mad, two mysterious men enter her life about the same time, and her life becomes endangered when she discovers that she is in possession of a special gift.

The backstory was interesting, the plot kept moving well, the characters were well drawn not just the main characters, and the story unfolded little by little.

This is a clean romance though there is some sexual tension.

This is part one of a trilogy. I am eager to read the second part as this one closed on a question actually more than one question, but one fundamental question for certain.

Highly recommend this book!
